Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese method (TCM) of encouraging the body to improve function and natural healing through the practice of inserting very thin sterile needles through your skin at strategic acupuncture points throughout your body. The treatment may sometimes be enhanced by following it up with the application of electrical stimulation or heat at those precise acupuncture points. TCM explains acupuncture as a way of balancing the flow of energy or life force (known as chi) through different pathways in the body. These energy channels, called meridians, are similar to rivers that flow through the body, and our general well-being is dependent on a balanced and smooth flow of energy throughout these meridians. If there is any obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers, this is much like a dam that backs up. Blockages, deficiencies, or imbalances in energy, blood or nervous impulses may eventually lead to an assortment of illnesses or a decline in overall well-being. By inserting needles into specific areas along these meridians, it is believed that acupuncture can rebalance your energy flow.
